Does your brand still reflect your business?
There’s a point in most businesses where things start to change. You’ve been going for a few years, the team has grown, the clients have changed, you’re offering more services and perhaps you’re working with bigger companies. Maybe you’ve even started thinking about where the business could go next.
And then you look at your website, your logo or your social media and think, hmm, that doesn’t really feel like us anymore.
It’s not necessarily bad. In fact, it might have been exactly right when you created it. But your business has moved on, and your brand has just stayed put.
A brand should grow with you
It’s something I’m being ask more and more of. A business starts with a logo, a few colours, a website, and some good intentions. It gets the job done, the business grows, and everyone gets on with what they actually do best, which is quite rightly running the business.
But five years later, that original website is still there. The messaging hasn’t changed, the brand is being used slightly differently by everyone in the team and suddenly the business feels much more established than the brand suggests.
That’s when it might be time to take a step back and ask yourself: does our brand still represent who we are now?
And you don’t always need a complete rebrand
This is where I think the word rebrand gets thrown around a little too easily. Sometimes you absolutely do need one, but sometimes you really don’t.
You might have a logo that people recognise. You might have a colour palette that’s strongly associated with your business, or you might have built up years of brand recognition that would be foolish to throw away. What you actually need could simply be a refresh.
A little more clarity. A better visual system. A new typeface. Stronger photography. More consistent messaging. And a website to house a brand that finally reflects the quality of what you actually offer.
Even some minor changes can make a big difference.
Looking good isn’t the whole point
Of course, as a designer, I love making things look good. But good branding isn’t just about making something look nice. It needs to work too. It needs to tell people who you are, make what you do clear, speak to the right people and, ideally, make someone feel something about your business before they’ve even spoken to you.
Because if you’re offering an expert, premium service but your website still looks like it was created ten years ago, there’s probably a disconnect. That disconnect can matter more than you might think.
Every business has a story
One of the things I enjoy most about working with established businesses is discovering what has happened since that original logo was created.
There’s usually a story, and a lot can change. Perhaps the business started with one service and now offers five. Perhaps the founder was the sole person behind the business, but now has built a team around them. Perhaps they’ve moved from working with small local businesses to much larger clients. And you know what, sometimes plans change and they could now be known for something they never originally planned to specialise in. All of these things are valuable, and should be reflected in the brand.
Your brand should tell the story of where you’ve come from, but it should also give people confidence in where you’re going.
Confidence matters
There’s something quite nice that happens when a brand finally feels right. You stop apologising for your website. You feel confident sending people to it. Your proposals look like they belong to the business you’ve built, your social media feels more consistent and your team knows how to use the brand.
Most importantly, when someone new discovers you, the first impression matches the experience they’re going to get. That’s the sweet spot to be in.
It’s not about looking bigger than you are or trying to be something you’re not. It’s about making sure the outside reflects what’s already happening on the inside.
So, are you in need of a refresh?
If your business has changed significantly over the last few years, it might be worth taking a look at your brand with fresh eyes.
Does your brand still feel like you? Does it reflect the level you’re now operating at? Does your website communicate what you actually do? Are you speaking to the right people? Does everything feel consistent?
And perhaps the biggest question of all: if you discovered this business today, would the brand make you want to find out more?
If the answer to a few of those is no, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to throw everything in the bin. It might just mean your brand needs a little attention.
Because sometimes your business doesn’t need to become something completely different. It just needs to look as good as the business you’ve become.
And that’s something I really enjoy helping businesses do.
At Studio K, lately I've been working with more and more established businesses who want to bring their brand up to date, improve their digital presence and communicate what makes them great.
Because good design isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about helping people see and understand it.
